Original cartone alla rustica with paper spine labels. FIRST EDITION. Abate Alberto Fortis travelled in Dalmatia from 1771 to 1774, publishing his letters to various luminaries in this work and the earlier Saggio d'osservazioni sopra l'isola di Cherso e Osero, 1771. The appendix in volume I is an account of the journey of Antonio Veranzio from Budapest to Constantinople in 1553, edited by Fortis. The engravings include costume, natural history specimens, and 2 maps of what is now Croatia and Bosnia. An English edition of both works was published in 1778. cf. Blackmer 618.

Contemporary marbled sheep with floral gilt borders and flat-backed gilt spine with lettering-piece (slightly warped). Letters written on a journey that took place in 1804. (3)
