Lot Essay

The present work was initially owned by Harry Innes Silliman, the editor of the Miner's Journal (later the Pottsville Journal) in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Silliman became acquainted with Luks, who grew up around the city, after writing an article about the artist. Saltbox was probably given as a gift from the artist following his exhibition of works at the Pottsville Library in 1925.
