Hawkins’s Picture of Quebec. Quebec: for the proprietor by Neilson and Cowan, 1834. 8º (169 x 100mm). Lithographic frontispiece and additional title, 11 lithographic plates after A.J. Russell and W.S. Sewell, and one engraved plate. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco by W. Ruthven, Quebec, with his ticket, gilt roll-tooled border with flower and shell motif enclosing central arabesque in blind, scrolling ornaments surrounding lettering on spine, gilt edges (joints and corners rubbed, light scuff marks to covers). Provenance: ‘Presented by the Hon. M. Black of Canada to Miss Archer New York 25th Nov. 1842’ (inscription, part in pencil, completed in ink, on front blank). FIRST EDITION. Hawkins was a keen collector of Canadiana, and published his book after eight years of research. Bealieu & Morley p. 217.

Views on the St. Lawrence. [New York?]: T. Nelson and Sons, [n.d.]. Plate volume (169 x 99mm) containing 12o text volume in rear pocket , 12 colour tinted engraved plates, original brown cloth, plate volume titled in gilt on front cover. This attractive souvenir for tourists is from the ‘American Views’ series issued by T. Nelson at ‘25 cents per packet’.

With 9 others on Quebec and the St. Lawrence, including the Quebec Almanac for 1817; 2 copies of the 1829 edition of the Picture of Quebec (one with loss to frontispiece) and the 1831 edition of the same; also a pamphlet on The Victoria (St. Lawrence) Bridge (London, [1859?]); and Chisholm’s folding wood-engraved Panorama of the River St. Lawrence.
