Lot Essay

George IV's attitude to his father's Lord Chancellor was transformed from hostility to affection upon his assumption of the Regency: he dubbed him 'Old Bags' (for the bag in which he carried the Great Seal - see lot 59) and on 7 July 1821, only five days before the present letter, conferred on him the earldom that he had previously refused.
