Sergeant Major Harry Barnes was Mentioned in Despatches by Lord Roberts (London Gazette 4.9.1901 refers).

He retired from the Somerset Light Infantry in 1909 having served for 26 years and in 1912 was appointed to The Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard, of which he was a Sergeant until he died in 1939, aged 73 years. A letter from St. James's Palace confirms his Jubilee and Coronation Medals (accompanies the lot). Barnes was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in January 1935.
