LITURGY, Greek rite, Evangelium: eron Euaggelioni. Venice: Andrea Spinelli, 10 May 1550.

2 (291 x 198mm). Greek type. Woodcut architectural title border, 4 full-page woodcuts, one of each of the evangelists, large woodcut headpiece opening each gospel book, printer's device at end; book headings, incipits and many woodcut byzantine initials PRINTED IN RED. (Some staining and soiling, somewhat heavier in quire hole in title amateurishly repaired.) Modern red morocco-backed boards preserving 17th-century sides, elaborately gilt with Madonna and child at centre of upper cover, crucifix on lower cover, edges gauffered with traces of gilt (holes and tears in early sides, slight wear at foot of spine). Provenance: early stamp 'MJ' on final verso.

Spinelli employed an amusing economy in the woodcuts; the four full-page woodcuts illustrating each of the four evangelists are printed with the same block but with a different head inserted for each man. Adams L-830; Essling I, 203.
