Gregor Schneider is an German artist who won the coveted Golden Lion Award representing Germany at the 2001 Venice Biennial, and has exhibited his works in (solo)exhibitions all around the world. Best known for his architectural manipulations, Gregor Schneider subverts reality to expose an unease with the ordinary. In his hands, everyday domestic spaces present an unnerving experience for the viewer. Among his most widely known works is Die Familie Schneider, which was on show in 2004 in London's East End. Schneider remade the interiors of two identical neighbouring houses in East London to exhibit a disturbing domestic space replete with strange smells, low ceilings, locked rooms with peep holes, and inhabitants who were also part of the experience. However Schneider is best known for his ongoing monumental project Dead 'House ur' (1985 - 2007), begun when the artist was still in his teens. Over the course of several years, Schneider compulsively renovated the interior of his parent's former home in the German city of Rheydt. His work is represented in the collections of Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago - MCA Chicago, Rubell Family Collection, Miami, The Saatchi Gallery, London, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Kunsthaus Zürich, Zürich, Museum Ludwig, Köln, Sammlung Goetz, München etc. His work was part of the exhibtion Anarchitecture in de Appel in 1999.
