AN EARLY VICTORIAN MAHOGANY LONGCASE REGULATOR
JOHN CARTER, LONDON, RETAILED BY JOHN WOOD, SOUTHAMPTON, CIRCA 1840
CASE: of stepped rectangular outline with chamfered angles DIAL : with silvered sight ring, the 12 inch dial with black engraved chapters and inscribed 'JOHN WOOD, 53 HIGH ST.T./Chronometer Maker, Southampton', blued steel hands MOVEMENT: secured with brass brackets to the seatboard with the thick plates joined by five front screwed pillars, maintaining power, Vulliamy type deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets, the wheels with six crossings, fine rating to the crutch piece, inscribed to the rear plate 'John Carter, Cornhill, LONDON' and numbered '1990', the pendulum suspended from a brass block to the backboard with calibrated rating nut and glass jar (mercury removed)
