Daniel Spoerri owes his international fame to the tableaux-pièges, also called ‘snare pictures’. As a representative of the school of Nouveaux Réalistes, Spoerri’s understanding of his creative work was radical: A work of art should come about with as little intervention by the artist as possible. Accordingly, the artist took objects found on his table and fixed them directly to the table top. The table top was then turned from the horizontal onto the vertical plane and, finally, hung on a wall. This alteration did, indeed, transform reality, an artistic act of alienation par excellence. Spoerri was also interested in items that no longer serve their purpose but are used instead to convey memories from the past.
