(Lacking half-title, Vol.II lacking pages 125-191 and plates 122-140, lacking frontispiece portrait, some spotting and marginal staining.) 19th-century cloth-backed boards (worn). Provenance: W.J. Bonser (bookplate on pastedowns); Hodgson (pencil note dated 16 August 1917); Gloucestershire county Library (stamp on pastedown vol.I, stickers on verso of title-pages). FIRST EDITION, of Plantes équinoxiales, recueillies au Mexique... the first section of the sixth part of Humboldt's and Bonpland's monumental scientific survey of Central and South America, conducted between 1799 and 1804. Stafleu and Cowan remark that Humboldt's own copy of this work was uncolored. A contemporary announcement of this work mentions no issue with colored plates.
