Barrett (without the fronstipiece by Sir E. Burne-Jones and last leaf with publisher's imprint and advertisements, first quire with clean but severe horizontal tears affecting half-title border, ms inscription and printed text of dedication). Embroidered padded red silk binding presumably by Elsie Hueffer, William Morris-style floral cloth endpapers (spine worn away, some wear to corners). PRESENTATION COPY, the first blank [between title and dedication page] inscribed in Ford's hand, "Robert Garnett Esq from the Author's Wife & the Author Xmas 1894". The front cover of the silk binding has the book's title stitched in white thread, along with the initials "RG" and "F/E", and the author's name ("Ford Hüffer"). The note "1st rev." is to be found on eight pages, and there are very slight corrections on six pages. PROOF AND PRESENTATION COPY of Hueffer's "third, last and best full-length fairy story" (Saunders I, p. 62), a touching memento of Ford and Elsie's friendship with Robert Garnett who had been amongst those who assisted the young couple in their elopement. Harvey notes that the book was probably published on 8 May 1894, but Saunders (I, p. 62) states that it was "published about a week before the wedding". How or why the book passed back into Elsie's possession is not known. Harvey A5.
