John Chamberlain: Foil and Form

Sale Overview
Christie’s is proud to present a selection of intimately scaled pieces by the celebrated American sculptor John Chamberlain, whose work transcends categorization with elements of Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art. In partnership with The John Chamberlain Estate, this curated exhibition includes domestic scaled aluminum foil sculptures upon which the monumental foils are modeled, exemplary tabletop sculptures in Chamberlain’s signature medium—assemblages of vibrantly colored scrap-metal automobile parts with playful titles. Also represented are the Tonks, constructed from disassembled toy trucks and cars which the artist bought en masse from an abandoned Tonka Toy factory. These works together form a survey exploring themes and ideas that preoccupied the artist throughout his illustrious six-decade career, displaying his signature combination of technical mastery and dynamic expression, all with a touch of playful whimsy.
