The Art of Luo Zhongli

As an artist significant in both modern and contemporary art in China, Luo Zhongli holds the view that ‘art should be entrenched in life.” He imbues his artistic conception with the folk aestheticism which forms a vocabulary of painting that is both distinct and unique to Luo Zhongli.

In almost 40 years of artistic creation, Luo’s art has consistently centred on the eternal themes of the reality of human nature and love. From his Realist style of the 1980s, the exploration of the folk mannerist style in the 1990s, to his change in employing the linear style after 2000, he has now fused the aesthetics of two-dimensional paintings with three-dimensional sculptures. Taking the modelled sculpture as a base, he then applies the purest and most primitive of colours to its surface, creating artwork with sharp lines and a robust appearance characteristic to wood sculptures and the exaggerated flexibility of the additive sculptures.

Christie’s is honoured to present this retrospective which spans forty years of creativity and at the same time, introduce the outstanding new works by Luo Zhongli. This exhibition allows us to explore how the artist, in the constant discourse of art, can continuously escape limitations of self as well as to probe the possibilities of visual arts operating in both two and three dimensions.
