Rifle number BGRX 505-1 was the prototype for Kimber's 'African Series' of rifles. The action was designed and built by Jim Wisner of Precision Metal Products and was machined out of solid 4149 bar stock. The objective was to combine the best features of the '98 Mauser and the Model 70 Winchester. The engraving was carried-out by Larry Peters, a member of the Engraver's Guild of America and Kimber's in-house engraver, and the stockwork was done by Darwin Hensley, a member of the American Custom Gunmaker's Guild. The African hunt in which the rifle was tested is discussed in the 1990 issue of Gun Digest
