We are pleased to share that Christie’s January Old Masters Paintings and Sculpture: Part II sale will return to a live auction platform this season. The auction features important paintings and sculptures representing five centuries of European artistic production. The sale is led by a trio of exciting still lifes: a pronkstilleven by the elusive W. Mertens, a wonderful basket painting by Jacob van Hulsdonck and a lovely flower piece by Balthasar van der Ast. The Italian school offerings include exciting portraits, including a portrait of Virginia de' Medici by Alessandro Allori and his workshop. Rounding out the Northern section are wonderful landscapes by Jan Josefsz van Goyen and the only signed and dated landscape by Jan Lievens. The French section includes a lovely pair of hitherto unpublished works by Louis-Léopold Boilly. There is a strong group of British Portraiture, including works by John Constable, Thomas Lawrence, Sir Peter Lely, and Godfrey Kneller.
