A RARE .45 COLT FACTORY SPECIAL ORDER LONG BARREL SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER WITH ORIGINAL SHOULDER STOCK, NO. 25992 FOR 1876
The sighted barrel (serial numbered 5992 under ejector housing) mounted with vintage non-factory fore-sight and marked COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A., dough-nut ejector, two-line patent dated frame with added rear sight, cylinder with mismatched number (5410), varnished walnut grips, nickel plated brass "skeleton" shoulder stock. Together with a recent wood and glass display case used to display this revolver in the museum
16 1/8 inch (40.9 cm.) barrel, 35½ inches (90.2 cm.) overall
Deep brown patina overall, fore and rear sights added during period of use, areas of wear to varnish, stock with some flaking and wear to edges some staining overall.
Together with some letters discussing the revolver's history. Including a notorised letter (signed by T.E. Dodson) on The Chilton Citizens Bank stationary noting the sale of this revolver by T. E. Dodson of Cameron, Texas to Gaines de Graffenried on May 7th, 1957, further attesting to the story of the purchase of this revolver by Mr. Dodson's father from a Major Julius William Whitley, of Milam County, in 1913.
A second letter signed by John D. Whitley, son of Major Julius W. Whitley, also from May 7th, 1957, notes that the revolver was acquired by his father on or around 1886. Together with the original bank draft for $250 dollars endorsed by T.E. Dodson.
Letters and applications to the U.S. Treasury Department discuss the registration of this revolver due to its attachable shoulder stock. One letter to Gaines de Graffenried notes that according to Newton C. Ellis, Acting Supervisor in Charge, "[that] it is my honest opinion that the said firearm [#25922] can be transferred to you by Mr. Dotson (sic) without having to pay a transfer tax, it being a museum piece."
Two letters and a receipt from the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art concerning the loan of several items, mentioning "Colt Frontier Buntline pistol, #25922", for an exhibition in Fort Worth, February 1964.
Three black & white photographs (used for The Gun Report article) of this revolver and Ned Buntline; and copies of Hobbies (article is signed, "Gaines de Graffenried in Ranger Museum"), and The Gun Report magazines accompany this lot.
