This painting has an historical attribution to the Neapolitan follower of Cavallino, Francesco Guarino, to whom it is attributed in a file at the Frick Art Reference Library. Lattuada, in his monograph on Guarino (op. cit.) rejected that attribution and proposed - on the basis of an old black and white photograph - that it might be an extremely early Roman work by Mattia Preti. Roberto Longhi (in a letter dated 5 June 1967) wrote 'Probably it is by a painter working in Rome about 1630, possibly by Pier Francesco Mola'.
