Oskar Pihl (1860-1897), who apprenticed in the St. Petersburg workshop of August Holmström, managed Fabergé's Moscow jewelry workshop until his death in 1897. The present brooch can be dated to 1887-1897, the period in which Pihl was active in Moscow. The stamp on the inside cover of the box further dates the brooch as pre-1900; Odessa was added to the stamp when the new branch of the firm was opened in 1900.
