MAYAN STUCCO HEAD

The youthful dignitary, probably the portrait of an important official, with downward cast, pierced eyes, aquiline nose and lips parted, adorned with earspool and a thick headband securing a stylized monster deity head; with extensive remains of deep red and Maya blue pigment.

Unique in Mesoamerica, Classic period stucco modeling includes realistic portraiture akin to that of certain Jaina terracotta statuettes.

Tête en stuc avec d’importantes traces de pigments rouge intense et bleu maya, représentant un jeune dignitaire avec des yeux percés tournés vers le bas, un nez aquilin et une bouche ouverte, orné de boucles d’oreilles, d’un important bandeau de tête qui retient une tête stylisée de monstre-divinité.

Singulière en Mésoamérique, la sculpture en stuc de la Période Classique compte des portraits réalistes semblables à ceux de certaines statuettes Jaina en terre cuite.
