ULÚA MARBLE VESSEL

The tall cylindrical vessel carved on each side with a stylized zoomorphic head with lunate eyes, ovoid mouth showing teeth and opposed volutes on the forehead, surrounded overall with bands of scroll work, the handles in the form of crouching stylized felines, supported on a ring base decorated with openwork fret motifs; in creamy white stone.
These elaborately carved translucent vessels from the Ulúa valley in Honduras were exchanged and traded as high status goods through the Mayan region from the lowlands to Costa Rica.

With their iridescent whiteness they have been linked to the mythological realms of water, clouds and white limestone peaks. For a similar example, see University of Pennsylvania Museum, inv. no. NA 5527 (Luke, 2012: p. 116, fig. 8.4).

Haut vase cylindrique en pierre blanc crème avec des poignées en forme de félins stylisés accroupis et reposant sur une base circulaire ornée de motifs ajourés, sculpté sur toute sa panse de motifs représentant des têtes zoomorphes stylisées aux grands yeux ronds, à la bouche ovale qui laisse apparaître la dentition et avec des volutes sur le front, l’ensemble étant encadré de motifs à enroulement.
Ces vases translucides sculptés avec raffinement et provenant de la vallée de l’Ulúa au Honduras ont servi de moyens d’échanges et de commerce en tant qu’objets de grande valeur depuis la région maya des Basses Terres jusqu’au Costa Rica.

En raison de leur aspect blanc irisé, ils ont été associés aux royaumes mythologiques de l’eau, des nuages et des montagnes de calcaire blanc. Pour un exemple similaire, voir University of Pennsylvania Museum, inv. n° NA 5527 (Luke, 2012 : p. 116, fig. 8.4).
