The fine carving on the aprons and spandrels distinguishes the table from others of this type. The elegant design of the scrolling spandrels is enhanced by the finely beaded line. The recessed-leg table is one of the most well-known and recognizable forms in Classical Chinese furniture. Tables of this elegant and restrained form trace their origins to the furniture design of the Song dynasty and several variations on this type are known. A huanghuali wine table of similar proportions is illustrated by Wang Shixiang in Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, vol. II, Hong Kong, 1990, pp. 77-80.
