HISPANO-FLEMISH SCHOOL EARLY 16th CENTURY, CIRCLE OF JUAN DE FLANDES, THE INCREDULITY OF SAINT THOMAS (?), OIL ON PANEL, IN AN ENGAGED FRAME

The surprised attitude of the saint kneeling before the Christ suggests that this scene depicts the incredulity of Saint Thomas, the apostle who did not believe in Christ's resurrection and who Christ made touch his open wound to prove his return.
The Gospel of John (20:24-29) records Christ's words to Thomas: “Look at my hands [...]”. - which the kneeling saint appears to be doing, however it is the second part of the phrase ‘put your hand out and press it into my side’ that is usually employed when depicting the episode.

L'attitude surprise du saint auréolé devant le Christ de la Résurrection laisse penser que la présente scène raconte l’Incrédulité de saint Thomas, l'apôtre qui ne croit pas à la résurrection du Christ et à qui le Christ fait toucher sa plaie béante pour lui prouver son retour.
Si l'Évangile de Jean (20, 24-29) rapporte les mots du Christ à Thomas 'regarde mes mains […]' – ce que semble faire le saint agenouillé –, c'est plutôt la seconde partie de la phrase 'avance ta main et enfonce-la dans mon côté' qui sert d'ordinaire à identifier l'épisode.
