CIRCLE OF GILLIS DE HONDECOETER, LANDSCAPE WITH A MAN ON A ROAD (RECTO); SCKETCH WITH AN HUNTER (VERSO), BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK

This charming drawing of a peasant crossing a forest was probably done in Amsterdam in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, by an artist in the circle of Gillis de Hondecoeter (1575-1638), a pupil of David Vinckboons (1576-1632). De Hondecoeter was one of the finest proponents of the Brueghelian style in the United Provinces at this time. Born in the southern Netherlands, his family moved to the United Provinces for religious reasons. In the present composition the lively brushstrokes add character to the rugged, craggy landscape, which the artist enlivens with a fine, dotted lines. The composition is comparable to another Landscape attributed to the circle of Gillis de Hondecoeter sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 9 November 1998, lot 56.

Ce charmant dessin représentant un paysan traversant une forêt a sans doute été réalisé à Amsterdam dans le premier quart du XVII^e siècle, dans l'entourage de Gillis de Hondecoeter (1575-1638), élève de David Vinckboons (1576-1632). De Hondecoeter est l'un des meilleurs représentants à cette époque de l'art des Brueghel dans les Provinces-Unies. Né dans le Sud des Pays-Bas, sa famille s'installa dans les Provinces-Unies pour des raisons religieuses. Les traits sont sûrs pour donner vie à cet espace escarpé et rude que l'artiste anime d’un trait fin en pointillé. La composition est comparable à un autre Paysage attribué au cercle de Gillis de Hondecoeter passé en vente chez Christie's, Amsterdam, le 9 novembre 1998, lot 56.
